NEW ETHICAL DILEMMAS FOR COACHES:
Identity Erasure & the Growth of Covering Culture in the Coaching Relationship
Co-Hosted event with the Chicago Chapter of ICF
Thursday, October 8
8 pm - 10:00 pm ET
Via Zoom
Approved for TBD CCE's
As organizational policies and workplace expectations continue to shift, coaches are increasingly encountering complex questions about identity, belonging, confidentiality, and ethical responsibility.
In this timely session, Sukari Pinnock Fitts and Amber Mayes will explore how changes in DEI policy and organizational culture may contribute to increased “covering” behaviors among clients — situations in which individuals downplay, conceal, or minimize aspects of their identity in order to navigate workplace expectations.
Participants will examine emerging ethical dilemmas for coaches, including the potential for coaches to unintentionally become complicit in systems that devalue difference, as well as the importance of maintaining nonjudgmental, protected, and confidential coaching spaces. The session will also consider how coaches can resist identity erasure and foster greater empowerment within the coaching relationship.
Topics will include race and ethnicity, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic background, religion and faith, and age and generational diversity.
Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of:
- Key concepts including collusion, covering, identity erasure, intersectionality, and social group identity
- How DEI policy changes and ideological shifts may influence client behavior and the coaching environment
- Ethical considerations coaches may face when organizational expectations conflict with the lived experiences clients bring into coaching
- The potential impact of supporting or reinforcing covering cultures within organizations
- Ways coaches can create spaces that honor difference, support client agency, and resist erasure
